A CubeSat is a type of miniaturized satellite that is used for a variety of purposes, including scientific research, technology demonstrations, and educational programs. Larger CubeSats, such as 3U CubeSats (30 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm) and 6U CubeSats (60 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm), are also available and can accommodate more advanced payloads and systems.

Here are a few examples of CubeSats that have been used in the aerospace industry:

  • NEA Scout: This was a 1U CubeSat that was launched in 2015 as part of the NASA's Near Earth Asteroid Scout mission. The NEA Scout was designed to search for asteroids that could potentially be hazardous to Earth, and it was equipped with a camera and other sensors to collect data about the asteroids it encountered.

  • QB50: This was a constellation of 50 CubeSats that was launched in 2017 as part of the QB50 project, which was designed to study the lower thermosphere. The QB50 CubeSats were equipped with a variety of sensors to collect data about the thermosphere, including temperature, humidity, and trace gases.

  • QBEE: This was a 3U CubeSat that was launched in 2018 as part of the QBEE (Quantum-enabled Biosatellite Experiment) mission. The QBEE CubeSat was designed to test the feasibility of using quantum technologies in space, and it was equipped with a quantum communication system to transmit data between the CubeSat and the ground.

  • ARGUS-IS: This was a 6U CubeSat that was launched in 2020 as part of the ARGUS-IS (Autonomous Real-Time Ground Ubiquitous Surveillance - Infrared Search) mission. The ARGUS-IS CubeSat was equipped with a high-resolution camera and other sensors to perform wide-area surveillance, and it was used to support a variety of applications, including disaster response and military operations.

Overall, these examples illustrate the wide range of missions that have been performed using CubeSats, demonstrating the versatility and capabilities of this type of miniaturized satellite.
